The Life-Course Model of Schizophrenia

There is growing evidence that schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental disorder (abnormal brain development very early in life) which 'lies dormant' until the phase of brain maturation which occurs in late adolescence/early adulthood.

The underlying subtle brain abnormalities may then be 'activated' by environmental factors at a later time. No one factor in itself is sufficient to 'cause' the illness; it is the accumulation of factors over time which precipitates and maintains the illness.
