Evidence for the Aetiological Theories: Infections During Childhood

Viral CNS infections in childhood (eg Mumps and Cytomegalovirus) may significantly increase the risk of subsequently developing schizophrenia.

The Swedish Cohort Study of 1.2 million children born in the 1970s and 80s showed that children who had been hospitalised with viral CNS infections (but not bacterial infections) were 50% more likely to be hospitalised in adulthood with schizophrenia.
