Biological Treatments

b) Antidepressants

There is limited evidence that these drugs are effective in dementia. The drug of choice is an SSRI because of its favourable side effect profile and in particular the absence of anticholinergic effects (which impair cognition)

c) Antipsychotic drugs

This class of drugs has the potential to lengthen QT interval on ECG so should be used only when clearly indicated. In addition, the atypical antipsychotics Olanzapine and Risperidone should be avoided where possible because of a small increase in risk of CVA. Indications for use in dementia: Delusions or hallucinations, Disturbed behaviour which is not responding to other treatments. NOTE: Antipsychotics should NOT be used in Lewy Body Dementia
