The vast majority of people with mental illness are not violent. However, violent incidents do occur for a variety of reasons in psychiatric hospitals as well as in general hospitals.
It is therefore important for all doctors to be familiar with the reasons why their patients may become violent. We need to know how to prevent incidents from occurring - and when prevention fails, we need to know how to manage violent patients safely and effectively.
