Lewy Body Dementia - the Pathological Process
The pathological hallmark is the presence of Lewy Bodies in the cerebral cortex. Whereas in Parkinson's Disease the Lewy Bodies are confined to dopaminergic pathways, in Lewy Body dementia the Lewy Bodies have spread throughout the cortex. There is significant overlap between the cognitive decline seen in 15-30% of people with Parkinson's Disease, and Lewy Body dementia - the 2 conditions are probably part of the same pathological spectrum.
