In addition to oedema, there are other important signs to look for when assessing SAM children including dehydration and appetite.
Appetite
Play the animation on the right and see the visible changes in children with SAM. As you can see in the animation, SAM children often have poor appetites. This may be due to infection and/or because their bodies are imbalanced with too little of some nutrients and too much of others. Lack of appetite in SAM children is a sign of complications.
