Introduction
You now know how the innate immune system recognises pathogen and you know how it destroys them. You have also heard us mention names of some of the innate cells that are helping us fighting pathogens. But what are mast cells, macrophages, neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils? Well they all originate from a hematopoitic stem cell in the bone marrow and are, at one stage or another, found in the blood. But here the similarities end! Their exact location within our body and what they do can greatly differ and this is what we are focusing on in the next few pages. However, before we dive into the world of innate cells we also would like to introduce another important weapon that the body utilises in fightling pathogens; the chemical chain reaction that is our complement system.
