Unit 2: Managing malnutrition: an integrated approach using the ten steps
Page 1 of 1
Introduction
In this Unit, you will learn where malnutrition should be managed and the importance of an integrated approach between the hospital and community. This integrated approach involves timely detection of SAM in the community and provision of treatment for those without medical
complications with ready-to-use therapeutic foods or other nutrient-dense foods at home.
Those with complications are admitted into inpatient management and
treated using the 10 steps. Once stabilisation steps 1-7 have been completed,
these children can be transferred back for community-based management
of steps 8-10.

The integrated approach ensures that there is timely detection of cases in the community and timely referral of those with complications for stabilisation. In addition, in this approach families of moderately malnourished children receive basic food rations for supplementary feeding to prevent deterioration of their malnutrition.

Let’s find out more about how the integrated approach works beginning with the criteria for determining malnutrition management options once SAM is identified. After that, you will learn the principles and components of community-based management and how it links with hospital-based management.
