Unit 2: Managing malnutrition: an integrated approach using the ten steps

Inpatient therapeutic care
As you have learnt in Unit 1, children with complications need to be stabilised in a hospital using the WHO 10 steps to malnutrition management. The stabilisation phase involves the first seven steps, which are to treat and prevent hypoglycaemia, hypothermia and dehydration, to correct electrolyte imbalance, to treat and prevent infections, to correct micronutrient deficiencies and to start cautious feeding.

Once complications are resolved, oedema reduced and appetite regained, the children can return to outpatient care and receive RUTF or nutritious family foods. These children must have regular follow-up checks at outpatient clinics or through home visits until they are fully recovered.

You must remember that all infants under 6 months with SAM should receive inpatient treatment until complications have resolved and their weight gain is satisfactory.

You have learnt how to implement the 10 steps in Unit 1 already. If you would like to review the steps, revisit Unit 1. Otherwise, go back to the Unit menu and continue to Unit Summary.
