Q. Read Abdul’s story again. Identify the condition which may have been caused by the action (or inaction) highlighted. Conditions: hypoglycaemia - hg, hypothermia - ht, infection - inf
Abdul has not had food for a long time. His blood glucose may be low.
Abdul is left uncovered and so might get cold.
Abdul has not been fed. His blood glucose will be getting lower. (Abdul should be fed straightaway).
Infection is a cause of hypoglycaemia and hypothermia as energy is diverted to fighting infection. (Antibiotics should be given straightaway).
Abdul has not been fed for 12 hours. His blood glucose will now be extremely low. He is in great danger.
Draughts cause chilling .
A blanket could save Abdul from hypothermia. Without one, he is at risk.
Abdul needs the whole feed to raise his glucose level. The amount of feed that he vomited should be
When there are not enough staff, the children are in danger of not being fed on time.
Abdul will be very cold.
Missing a feed is very serious. Abdul’s blood glucose level will fall again.
Even feeding late can affect blood glucose levels and increase risk.
Abdul needs the whole feed to raise his glucose level. The amount of feed that he vomited should be offered again.
He will become even colder if he is wet.
This is an emergency but the nurses have not acted to save Abdul’s life.
