Oedema
Click each step to see the description and its accompanying animation.
Step 1: applying thumb pressure to feet
To examine for oedema, hold Fatima’s feet with your thumbs on top, press
the top of her feet gently for 10 seconds and then lift your thumbs.
Step 2: checking if the dents remain
Check if the dents (pit) on the top of Fatima’s feet remain. If there is oedema, a dent (pit) remains for some time (at least a few seconds) where the oedema fluid has been pressed out of the tissue. For Fatima, the dents on the top of both her feet remained, after the pressure was lifted.
Step 3: recording
Record Fatima as oedematous. Note that you should record a child as oedematous if both feet present pitting oedema.
