Introduction
Aims
As described in Module 1, children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) need special and priority care. They need to be screened quickly to decide what immediate action is required.
In this module, you will learn the indices that you need to use for assessing malnutrition including in which situations you should use them (Unit 1), how to take measurements of height, length, weight and MUAC (Unit 2) and how to examine a child for oedema, appetite and hydration (Unit 3).

Learning outcomes
At the end of the module you should:
• have a good understanding of the indices that are used for assessing malnutrition;
• know how to choose and when to use each index;
• be able to take measurements of height, length, weight and MUAC;
• be able to examine a child for oedema, appetite and dehydration.
