What is malnutrition?
Nutrition is the foundation for health and development. Like Kofi, well-nourished children have stronger immune systems, less illness and better health and survival. They can learn better and are more likely to do well at school. Healthy people are stronger, more productive and achieve a better quality of life. They are more able to break the cycle of poverty and hunger.
Malnutrition needs to be prevented because it leads to increased risk of death and infections. Malnutrition in early life is also associated with loss of potential. Foetal malnutrition that leads to low birthweight increases the risk of chronic disease in adult life.
