Type 3 diabetes is due to destruction of the pancreas in response to an insult (rather than auto-immune destruction). The causes can include alcohol, pancreatitis or a pancreatic tumour. Type 3 diabetes is very similar to type 1 as both result in a loss in production of insulin.

Type 4 diabetes is gestational diabetes which occurs during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes results from insulin resistance due to hormone changes. It is important to identify as it can influence the health of the mum and baby. Mums have a 50% chance of developing type 2 diabetes over the next 10 years.

Other forms of diabetes: This includes steroid-induced diabetes and secondary diabetes due to other conditions, for example Cushing's disease.
