Issues around information sharingInformation sharing refers to the process of disclosing information affiliated with a patient to another party. Within the NHS appropriate information sharing is pioneered through information governance.

Information Governance ensures necessary safeguards for, and appropriate use of, patient and personal information.

How you discuss a patient’s diagnosis, prognosis and treatment options is often as important as the information itself. This includes how you use and communicate this information within a digital environment. You should:

• Involve other members of the healthcare team in discussions with the patient, if appropriate
• Make sure the patient knows if there is a time limit on making their decision, and who they can contact in the healthcare team if they have any questions or concerns.
