This procedure can be used when the:

Outcome (Dependent) variable is a Continuous and Normally distributed measure
Exposure (Independent) variable is 1 group

Present this graphically using a Histogram, Box and Whisker or Dot Plot

In SPSS select: Graphs > Chart Builder - Gallery – Histogram | Simple Histogram, Boxplot | Simple Boxplot or Scatter/Dot | Simple Dot Plot

To create the dot plot, click the Element properties button and select Plot Shape Symmetric. In the Basic Elements tab Check the Transpose button. Use the Chart Editor to add a reference line to the X axis by Setting the Reference Line to Mean.

Analyse this in SPSS using:

Analyze >Compare Means > One_Sample T Test

The Test Value is the expected value for this variable. So may not be zero, e.g. for Height it could be 1.7

Report this quoting the:

Mean Difference from the Test Value, 95% Confidence Intervals and p-value
Use the confidence intervals output by SPSS
