How to interact with parents and carers
It is likely that you would be anxious about the child’s condition and about your family at home, and how long you will have to stay and what it will cost. You may worry about where you will sleep, if you will be given any food, and whether there is a toilet. You can easily see that parents and carers will need information and assistance. Never scold or blame a parent for their child’s problems.
Be friendly, polite, and listen to their concerns. Consider parents as partners in the care of the children and invite them to help. Make them feel welcome. Explain what is wrong with the child, the immediate treatment, and what the parent/carer can do (e.g. keeping the child warm and dry, feeding the special milk, breastfeeding, providing gentle loving care). Explain what she can do to prevent spread of infections (e.g. washing hands with soap).
