Summary
In this Unit, you have learnt the different indices for assessing malnutrition,
what is required and when to use them. You have also learnt about oedema,
a clinical sign of SAM, its causes and grades. You have also learnt about
dehydration and appetite which are of particular importance in severely
malnourished children.
Remember that weight-for-age is mainly used for growth monitoring, height/length-for-age
for assessing prevalence of chronic malnutrition and differential diagnoses
in underweight children and weight-for-height/length for assessing prevalence
and severity of acute malnutrition.
Go back to the Unit menu and continue to the Unit assessment to test your
knowledge.
